A Study on Leukocyte Alkaline Phosphatase Activity

Abstract
The value of leukocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP) activity as an aid in the diagnosis of certain hematologic diseases is now well established. The LAP assessment is particularly valuable in differentiating chronic myelogenous leukemia from leukemoid reactions, polycythemia vera from secondary polycythemias, as well as bacterial infections from non-bacterial infections. However, knowledge of the significance of variations of the levels in LAP activity is limited and the functions of this enzyme in neutrophils are not known.
This report describes the LAP activity in normal Koreans and in patients with several diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis, liver cirrhosis, primary hepatoma, infectious hepatitis, liver abscess, pyogenic infections, and salmonellosis.
The results obtained are as follows:
1. LAP activity in normal Korean was 17.2+1.5 (M¡¾S. E.) with range of 3-37.
2. LAP activity was markedly elevated in patients with liver abscess and pyogenic infections.
3. LAP activity in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and salmonellosis was moderately increased, and slightly increased in patients with liver cirrhosis and primary hepatoma. But it was normal in patients with infectious hepatitis.
4. There was no relationship between LAP activity and serum alkaline phosphatase and leukocyte count.
5. LAP activity was decreased with reduction of leukocyte count in patients with pyogenic infections on the antibiotic treatment, but there was no definite correlationship.
